This recitation helps students review and master the concepts of gene expression, as well as modeling a useful study technique. Students work with whiteboards and dry-erase markers while the instructor can walk around to guide/ask probing questions. The activity can be tweaked depending on the instructor's specific expectations for students. Ranking the potential severity of various mutations forces students to integrate and work with the material in practical ways. Rich discussion about every part of this activity is likely to take more time than is available (45 min - 1 hr could be take just by asking questions and discussing). Consider the needs of the class and adjust accordingly.

I used a portion of this recitation (due to time constraints) to review gene regulation with my students. In particular, I used the activity where they are given a list of gene regulation terms and asked if they happen in Prokaryotes, Eukaryotes, or Both. One strength of this resource is that it helped students understand that many of the differences occur due to the presence of absence of a nucleus, and therefore if transcription and translation occur apart or together. I did not notice any weaknesses and wish that I had the time to do more of the activities in this power point with my students. My students also seemed to like the activity. In particular, they felt it helped them keep the different terms straight because they could now categorize them. I would absolutely use this activity again, though I would like to do so when I have more time to spend on it. I definitely recommend utilizing the whiteboards
